Studying Abroad and Being a Perspective Seeker
My time in Ghana, Africa.
Ghana, Africa is a place that is full of rich history and culture that has so much beauty and importance. As a part of this trip one of our roles that we played was being a sponge who is soaking up all of the culture that is to share in Ghana. On the other hand we also were studying inclusive education practices for students with disabilities through school visits and interviews. Both of these goals combined lead to growth in both a personal and a professional way for me as an educator.
Below is my final project for the study abroad program, which contains reflections and media from the trip.
"Studying abroad is more than just learning but it teaches a person to be culturally aware"
In Ghana I got to experience going to various schools for students with special needs, lectures and stories from various educators, and working closely with professionals in my field. Outside of education, I got to meet people that live there and experience their culture in Ghana which was important for learning new perspectives. All of these things led me to developing skills in inclusive and culturally relevant teaching. Now after the trip I have gained ideas that I am able to bring to my own classroom such as utilizing resources that I do have and truly looking at the whole child.
Going on this trip has made me feel empowered to continue my education outside of the program and to always keep seeking new perspectives and cultures. In my classroom I will come across many students that have a different culture than my own and I have learned how to embrace and appreciate that. The world is more colorful with the many stories and people that are out there.
